Futsal Squad Announcement - World Cup Qualifiers
14 man squad announced
A dozen Royal Gibraltar Police Officers set off today, on a charity cycle run from the Estadio Algarve in Faro/Loule, Portugal to Gibraltar.
The Police Officers are riding under the banner "It's Coming Home" commemorating the return of International Football to Gibraltar, from the Algarve, with the aim of rasing as much money as possible.
The officers will be wearing specially designed cycling kit with the badges of both the RGP and the GFA. Earleir on this Week, GFA Vice President & The RGP's Cycle Run Organiser, PC Donovan Galia showed off the cyclists kit at the GFA Headquarters:
Gibraltar FA General Secretary Dennis Beiso is delighted to offer the GFA's full support to the cycle run:
We are very pleased to be able to support the RGP with this excellent initiative. It will no doubt be a tough task for the cyclists and we wish them a safe and successful venture. We particularly like the symbolism of undertaking a journey from the Estadio do Algarve to the Victoria Stadium - a journey our players and fans have been very familiar with. We look forward to the cyclists receiving a warm Gibraltarian welcome when they finally cycle into a full stadium before Gibraltar plays Armenia on the 16th November".
Commenting at the launch of the event RGP Commissioner Ian McGrail stated:
The RG Police is keen to involve itself with charity and community events and this is a perfect example of the type of initiatives that we wish to encourage our officers to pursue. The cyclists involved will be undertaking a tough and strenuous sporting challenge for a worthwhile cause and we thank them for their efforts and spirited attitude.”
PC Galia, a keen cyclist himself and football lover, said:
The sport has taken off in a big way with the police force and we thought it would be a good idea to combine the cycle run with a fund raising event. We are grateful to the sponsors for their support in making the Faro run possible.”
Everyone at the GFA wishes them a safe and successful ride and we look forward to welcoming them home at the weekend!
