Gibraltar U21's secure historic 1st ever victory

Gibraltar's U21's secured their first ever victory with an impressive 1-0 win over FYR Macedoina, earlier on this evening at the Estadio Algarve in Portugal.

After coming home from Armenia, disappointed to lose in Yerevan to a solitary Armenian goal from the penalty spot buoyed by their overall performance, Gibraltar's U21's were ready for their Macedonian visitors. Right from the kick off Aaron Asquez sent his young team out to impose themselves on their opponents, and it worked.

Gibraltar's back four of Crisp, Britto, Jolley and Annesley were dominant from the kick off. Ballantine, Vinent and Torilla disciplined in the midfield and Hernandez, Isola and Pizarro provided the outlet to turn turn defence into attack and hit the Macedonians on the break.

It was this dicipline that was to get them into the break at 0-0. Keeping their shape and soaking up all the Macedonian pressure set them up perfectly for the second half.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first, right up until the 64th minute. Ethan Britto whipped in a free kick and captain Graeme Torilla rose above the Macededonian defence to head home Gibraltar's first goal at this level. Nothing less than their performance deserved.

A nervey 30 minutes followed including the addition of 5 minutes of inury time, but as in the first half Gibraltar kept their shape and their disicpline, something that could not be said of the Macedonians who lost Popzlatanov to a red card for a second bookable offence in stoppage time.

But this Gibralar U21 team were not to be denied, their first goal, their first clean sheet and their first win at this level. The development of this team is there for all to see under the guidance of Aaron Asquez and his backroom staff.

Next up for the U21's is a double header in March 2018.
