Europa FC win the 2018 Pepe Reyes Cup

Europa FC took home the first trophy of the 2018/19 Gibraltar Domestic Football season beating Lincoln Red Imps 4-2 on penalties, after the scores were level 1-1 after the ninety minutes in the final of the Pepe Reyes Cup.

Gibraltar’s top two teams in recent seasons were ready to go for the new season and renew a rivalry that has developed into the arguably the most anticipated fixture in Gibraltarian Club Football.

Both teams had new signings on show, from the teams that ended last season’s campaigns set a high tempo from the kick off.

And it was one of their new signings that gave Europa FC the lead in the first half. Ruben Blanco ‘Rubo’ who was brought in from Mons Calpe SS in the summer, headed Mikey Yome’s cross past young Jaylan Hankins in the Lincoln goal.

But Lincoln were not about to lie down, and before the half time whistle Oliver rose high above the Europa defence to head Gamiz’s cross into the Europa net.

Into the second half and Europa forward Tjay DeBar was proving a nuisance to his old Lincoln red imps team mates and was a constant threat as the game went on.  For Lincoln Falu Aranda and Juanma Ortiz up front were proving a handful to the Europa defence.

As the 90 minutes were up nothing could separate the sides so it was on to penalties. Unfortunately for Lincoln Red imps, Sykes Garro blazed his spot kick over the bar, and Diego Gamiz saw his effort hit crash into the crossbar meaning Europa won the shootout 4-2 and with it the 2018 Pepe Reyes Cup.
