Europa FC win the Pepe Reyes Cup

Europa FC stunned Last season's Double winners Lincoln Red Imps FC to take home the Pepe Reyes Cup, the traditional curtain-raiser to Gibraltar's domestic season, and the first silverwear of the 2016/17 season.

Two sublime  second half finishes from number nine Gomez-Bernal 'Kike' gave Juanjo Gallardo's men the victory, however it was Lincoln who started the match on the front foot. With their high tempo all action start, the Red Imps looked to get the ball into into Cabrera and Lee Caciaro up front whenever possible.  However neither front man was able to trouble Javi Munoz in the Europa goal.

As the game went on, Liam Walker in the Europa midfield was starting to get more and more of the ball, and with Moya screening the Europa defence the green and blacks started to come into the game more and more.

Yeray went off injured for Lincoln in the 39th minute, and with Anthony Bardon not yet fit enough to take his place in the centre of their midfield, new signing Colman came on for his debut.

It was in the 65th minute that Kike opened the scoring with a neat finish past Lincoln stopper Raul Navas. Then nine minutes later he was at it again, tucking away a cross from the Europa left had side leaving Navas with no chance.

Lincoln rallied late on but in truth never really troubled Javi Munoz's goal.

So Europa FC draw first blood and take home the first piece of silverwear this season. The improvements in their game were there for all to see tonight and time will tell on whether or not Juanjo Gallardo's men can mount a serious challenge in the league this season, which must ultimately be Europa's aim. As for Lincoln Red Imps, they will have to cope with the loss of Walker, but they will surely but this behind them and their experienced Gibraltar Internationals along with Head coach Julio Cesar Vlaovich will no doubt make them bounce back instantly.

An interesting domestic campaign awaits!
