Gibtelecom Rock Cup Final Preview

Gibtelecom Rock Cup Final

Sunday 28th May, 7pm, Victoria Stadium

It certainly has been an interesting week on the domestic football front in Gibraltar. Ahead of this weekend's Gibtelecom Rock Cup Final, Europa FC secured their first league title since they reformed and reemerged as one of the dominant forces in local football. Over the past three to four years they have been building up an onfield rivalry with Sunday's opponents, Lincoln Red Imps who will undoubtedly still be hurting from surrendering their title for the first time in 14 years.

Sunday's Gibtelecom Rock Cup final therefore will no doubt have a lot riding on it even though European places for next year have all been confirmed.

(Europa FC qualify for the Champions League and Lincoln Red Imps & St Joseph's FC take the two Europa League slots by virtue of their respective league positions and the fact that the top two in the League will contest the Cup Final).

Europa FC could complete their first ever Treble in their new era as they took home the Pepe Reyes Cup as well as the League Title.

Lincoln Red Imps, on the other hand, will be desperate to ensure 2016/17 does not end as a trophy-less season. A season that started in such euphoric circumstances when they managed that historic first leg win over Celtic at the Victoria Stadium all the way back in July.

In an added twist to the ever-growing rivalry between the two clubs, Gibraltar International and key member of Lincoln Red Imps last two title winning squads, and a starter in their historic win against Celtic, joined Europa on a free transfer last summer, after the Champions League Qualifiers, and has played an instrumental role in their successes this season.

With the title race going down to the wire Sunday's final looks all set to be a thrilling encounter and the latest installment in this growing rivalry between Gibraltar's top two in the league table.

At their pre match media events, Lincoln Red Imps revealed their only injury concern, at present, is defender Kenneth Chipolina, whilst Europa FC have a fully fit squad to choose from.
