Gibraltar’s National team have begun their preparations for Junes upcoming away internationals hot on the heels of the end of the domestic season earlier on this week.

Julio Ribas wasted no time in getting down to work, albeit in the beautiful yet unfamiliar surroundings of the Europa Point Sports Complex yesterday evening. With the Victoria Stadium out of action due to the relaying of the pitch, the facility on the iconic southernmost tip of Gibraltar will now become the National Team’s home for the next fortnight as Ribas ramps up his preparations for two key friendlies in Slovenia and Andorra.

With the domestic season just finished and Gibraltar’s top clubs keen to give some of their key players a rest before imminent European commitments coming at the beginning of July, Ribas has called up a ‘new’ training squad lead by recent international debutants Ethan Santos and Jamie Bosio.

Gibraltar’s first fixture of the June International window sees them travel to Slovenia for the first International Friendly on the 4th June at the Bonifika Stadium in Koper. Slovenia who are currently 63rd in FIFA’s World Rankings, recently beat Croatia in this year’s March international window. Captained by Atletico Madrid’s superstar Goalkeeper, Jan Oblak, Slovenia went through 2020 undefeated on the international stage, including a successful UEFA Nations League campaign.

Second up for Gibraltar is a visit to Andorra’s Estadi Nacional to take on a Andorran outfit who are currently sitting 158th in FIFA’s World Rankings and will be keen to set the record straight given their recent UEFA Nations League performances. Despite this, Koldo Alvarez’s Andorra’s Euro 2020 qualifying campaign was one of their best ever, including a win over Moldova at home and a draw with Albania away.

As always, Julio Ribas will have his team fired up and ready for both challenges that Gibraltar face, away at the start of June. His long term project with the National Team planning ahead and ensuring his young players are prepared for future endeavours whilst simultaneously ensuring the whole squad is as prepared as possible for the challenges they are faced with in the immediate future.
