Lincoln Red Imps FC sealed yet another Gibraltar League title tonight following a 3-0 victory over Lions Gibraltar FC on the last day of the season.
In what proved to be one of the most contested domestic title run ins in recent years, with Europa and St Joseph's also going into the final week of the season, all with a chance of lifting the league shield, Lincoln had already had a chance to clinch the league title earlier this week against St.Joseph's, however they squandered a two goal lead late on against The Saints. Consequently they were forced to wait until tonight to finally get their hands on yet another Gibraltar league title, once again under the guidance of Mick McElwee.
In what proved to be a COVID interrupted season, Lincoln got off to a flying start as they claimed an 8-0 victory over College 1975 FC in their first game, setting the tone for the season
The 'Red Imps' would go on to win seven more games, despite dropping points in a 2-2 draw with Europa FC and in a 2-0 defeat to Lynx FC as they finished the first half of the campaign in second place with 25 points.
Following the league split, Lincoln made a statement start to their Championship Group campaign as they won their first three games in a row, scoring a total of 15 goals against Europa FC, Lynx FC and Mons Calpe SC.
Despite their good start, Lincoln did suffer a couple of back-to-back setbacks in their title winning campaign, drawing 1-1 with Lions Gibraltar FC back in April hot on the heels of a 1-0 defeat at the hands of St.Joseph’s FC.
With this being said, the newly crowned Champions responded well, finding their form at just the right time as they went on a three game winning run in May that started with a 3-1 victory over fellow challengers and recent domestic rivals Europa FC before the Red Imps would go on to claim all three points against Lynx FC and Mons Calpe SC.
Having clinched top spot in the league, Lincoln will now begin preperations for another UEFA Champions League Qualifying campaign at the beginning of next season.
