As part the Gibraltar Football Association's ongoing footballing infrastructure projects, the two main pitches at the Victoria Stadium were re-laid during the month of June.

The artificial surface on the main pitch at the Stadium was the first to be replaced, with the removal of the existing surface beginning as soon as the domestic season finished in May. The project as a whole had to be programmed into a very tight schedule, as the pitch had to be ready and importantly FIFA tested and approved by the end of June, to allow Gibraltar’s four domestic clubs to prepare for their European matches in the UEFA Champions League and the all new UEFA Europa Conference League Qualifiers.

As a result Lincoln Red Imps FC, Europa FC, St Joseph’s FC and Mons Calpe SC, were able to train on the new pitch ahead of their European Campaigns which began last week.

The first official match on the re-laid surface at the Victoria Stadium was last week’s UEFA Europa Conference League first leg between Mons Calpe SC and FC Santa Coloma of Andorra.

Importantly, as part of the project at the Victoria Stadium, replacing Pitch Number 2 was crucial. The old surface was tired and worn out and as the centrepiece of so many of Gibraltar’s Youth Football matches, an upgrade and replacement was long overdue.

As part of the resurfacing, remedial works were carried out on the underlayer (below the surface of pitch 2) meaning the new surface can embed itself properly.

Along with the new surface, pitch number 2 is now split up into three small sizes pitches, for youth football matches and fixtures. Furthermore, the artificial pitch is the same as the one laid on the main pitch meaning it provides an excellent additional training facility for Gibraltar’s senior footballers.

Commenting on the project, the Gibraltar FA’s General Secretary, Ivan Robba stated:

“I am delighted at the fact that we have been able to replace the surfaces on both of the main pitches at the Victoria Stadium. We have a brand-new state of the art FIFA certified surface to allow us to play International fixtures and European domestic matches at the Stadium.

Equally importantly, we now have a long overdue new surface on Pitch 2, which as of this week, our youngsters have begun to enjoy as our annual summer camp has started. the Gibraltar FA is committed to working on and continuously upgrading and improving our facilities and these two new surfaces are just the start of our long-term goals to develop all of Gibraltar’s footballing infrastructure.”

Gibraltar’s youngsters have already begun to enjoy the new surfaces at the Victoria Stadium with over one hundred and fifty children taking part in the 2021 Gibraltar FA’s summer camp which is spread across both pitches every morning for the next two weeks!
