Former Premier League Referee, and the current General Manager of the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) the body responsible for match officials across all of professional football in England, Mike Riley, was in Gibraltar yesterday to hold a workshop with Gibraltar’s referees and other match officials.
Speaking to Gibraltar FA match officials yesterday, Mike Riley explored different refereeing topics such as lower body contact in the penalty area, dealing with different scenarios and incidents in the penalty area as well as coaching and technical tips for match officials to use in the different situations they find themselves in during matches. He then closed the workshop by dealing with the importance of teamwork between match officials when a decision needs to be made on a player being offside and deciding on the impact that this player has on his opponent(s).
As well as a workshop for Gibraltar’s match officials, Mike Riley was also here to explore avenues in which referee development can be enhanced on the Rock.
Mike Riley was a FIFA listed referee for ten years and took charge of Premier League matches from 1996 right up to his retirement in 2009.
Speaking after the workshop, the Gibraltar FA’s Referee Manager Adrian Bacarisa was delighted at being able to welcome Mike Riley to Gibraltar:
“It has been great to have Mike with us and holding this workshop for our referees. We are constantly looking at how we can develop and grow the standard of our match officials, and to be able to count on the ongoing support of the PGMOL’s General Manager is amazing for us.”
